Patience

Do you ever just have one of those days...you know when you are trying to get something done and all little ones want to do is make a mess?  Well, if you don't then you may be telling a fib?!  I try to be patient but often times I forget to stop and pray about it.  In the moment everything seems like it is going all wrong and I am not getting MY way!  I sound like a toddler myself don't I?!

I had to look into the WORD, God's word and have Him remind me just how important patience is.  It is one of the fruits of the Spirit.

In Galatians 5:22-25  we see all of the fruits we as Christians are supposed to possess.  Love is the greatest.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

What does that mean Fruit of the Spirit?  I had to dig deeper into this.  I have always heard it and read it but I asked God to open my heart and let me in on more.   It is letting the Holy Spirit (which God gives us when we ask him to be our savior and come into our hearts) guide us and is working in us to make a life more pleasing to God.

God is alive and is the same today tomorrow and always.  We can always ask him for forgiveness if we had one of those days.  I am so thankful that he shows mercy and grace to me.  I mess up so many times but he is gracious and forgives us when we ask for forgiveness.

I have said it before but I am far from perfect all we can do is ask God to show us the right way and help us to be more like Him.

I get so frustrated on little things sometimes I have to take a step back and realize that what I am getting upset about really doesn't matter!  So what if I have to re-fold clothes, clean the bathroom again, etc.  Whatever it is you can get over it and ask God to help you be more patient!

I know I always want to be the perfect parent but I hope I am not alone and the only one who gets those days?!

Much Love to you all!!

Miranda :)

Spending Time in the Word

Spending time in the Word

When I started this blog I said I was seeking a more God focused lifestyle and I have not posted anything on spending time with the Lord.  Sometimes we loose focus on the things we are supposed to be focused on like praying and studying and spending time in communication with the One who created us!

In saying this, I will be trying to post a Daily Word that might include a simple Bible verse or something that I am studying.  This will help me to keep focused on what is really important and maybe it will help you as well!  I know as mom's we do not always have much quiet time to ourselves but it is important to spend time with God alone each day.

September 5th -Having the Fear of God

Our preacher spoke about having the Fear of God this past Sunday.  I wanted to just share a little of it.
Having the Fear of God is mentioned all throughout the Bible.  Paul mentions it talking to the Corinthian Church.  He stated in 2 Cor. 7:1  Talking about the Temple of the Living God, he wanted the church to be a holy people, filled with God's presence.  He also said that we should be reverent in the presence of a Holy God.

I think many times we go to church or go throughout our day without a healthy fear of God and his presence.  We should always have this fear in us if we are followers of Christ.  I am not talking about being scared of God but having a healthy fear of the awesome maker of our souls!

In Prov. 1:7  it states, "Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline."

In my Bible notes it explains that, "Fear of the LORD recognizes total dependence on God for everything, including knowledge and wisdom.  It is not just a mental attitude but involves service, love, and obeying God's laws.  (see Deut. 10:12-13)  Fear of the Lord is the basis of all knowledge.  How can we understand life without knowing the most fundamental truth about it-that is God's creation?"

In closing I leave with this passage from Psalms 128:1-6

Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
who walk in obedience to him.
You will eat the fruit of your labor;
blessings and prosperity will be yours.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
    within your house;
your children will be like olive shoots
    around your table.
Yes, this will be the blessing
for the man who fears the Lord.
May the Lord bless you from Zion;
may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem
all the days of your life.
May you live to see your children’s children—
    peace be on Israel.

August 22nd-Music

What kind of music do you listen to?  This is not to judge anyone but I am just wanting to tell how I started listening only to Christian music and how my life has changed from just one thing.

We have a roku box so we only get a few things at our house and Pandora is always playing in the background as I do not let little girl watch too much TV.  There are so many good Christian stations that you can find just about anything you want.

Why would you want to do this?  As a follower of Jesus Christ we should want to saturate ourselves with praises and songs that lift up the name of Jesus.  If you actually listen to some other music it doesn't make sense and definitely doesn't lift your spirit like you think.  I used to listen to rap music and I really didn't know what they were meaning behind the words they would say.  Since I have been forgiven of my past I proceed to the future trying to grow closer in my walk and I admit it is a struggle!

K-LOVE is a Christian radio station that I listen to in the car and you can probably find one in your area!  They have a 30-day Challenge and I encourage you to take the leap of faith and listen to it only when you are in the car or at home.

One day we will be rejoicing in Heaven singing praises to our God and Savior!  I just think how awesome will that be?!  No more pain or suffering in this old dying world.  It will turn to ashes!  Material things do not matter it is the things above which we should put our investments into.
This makes me think of my Grandmaw who just passed away at the old age of 93.  I hope she is in Heaven and I will see her along with my other grandparents one day!

I would love to hear your considerate thoughts!

August 4th-Come like a Child

Today we had VBS at our church we do it on a Saturday morning from 9-1 as to accommodate the small kids and workers.  Seeing all of the kids come out today was really a blessing!  I just wanted to share a little from what I saw.  The excitement on faces as they were learning songs about Jesus that some of them have probably never heard was priceless.  And Jesus tell us all that we are to come to Him like a little child.  They are so eager to learn and I admit, I wish I was more like that!

 Matthew 18
English Standard Version (ESV)
Who Is the Greatest?

18 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them 3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, 6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,[a] it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

Just a reminder that we need to humble ourselves and our selfish ways and turn to HIM and thank Him for what he has done!

Buttons Diapers Review and Giveaway

Today I am excited to bring you a cloth diaper review and giveaway from Buttons Diapers.  They are a hybrid two part system with covers and snap in inserts.

I received the diaper in a most unique package with my favorite chevron print tissue paper!  Who wouldn't want to get fluffy mail like this?!

Buttons Diapers is a family business ran by a husband and wife team.  They designed their diapers to be easy to use and affordable to everyone.

Photo from Buttonsdiapers.com

Buttons Diapers offer nine colors of covers at this time and with the exception of one, they are all gender neutral!  The covers are all reasonably priced at $11.00.  The inserts come in two different sizes a small (fits 9-20lbs) and large (20-35lbs).  I chose the large but we probably would have been okay with the small for daytime because little girl is not a heavy wetter.
The inserts are two part and both snap into the diaper cover.  The first is a daytime insert that has 4 layers of absorbent micro fiber, with a very soft layer of fleece on top.  The second is a night time doubler with 6 layers of micro fiber.

I decided to try out this diaper as a night time diaper.  Our BG pockets are getting holes in them (I only use them at night)  so I would love an alternative.

Here is what I thought:
  • I love the thickness-Total 10 layers of micro fiber to stay dry
  • The top layer was dry against little girl after all night (12 hours)
  • I like that you can unsnap the inserts and reuse the cover
  • It is a one size cover so you can basically use from birth to potty train
  • Very absorbent for night time!
  • Great that it has double gussets

The only thing that may be a drawback for some would be the sides do not have a bottom button.  With only one insert it is not as noticeable but when you put both it is bulky and the sides stick out just a little.

Little girl is about 22 pounds and 19 1/2 months

If you are just starting out with cloth this system is very reasonably priced and if you are wanting to buy enough for an entire stash they recommend getting enough for 2-3 days totaling $240.00.  That is a great deal considering how much some systems may be.

In closing I wanted to share a video from Buttons Diapers YouTube page that I thought was very helpful in showing their system!  The video is here.

Overall, I am very pleased with this diaper cover system!  This will be our nighttime diaper from now on, I just need more inserts and we will be set!

Eco-Me Dish Soap Review and Giveaway

If you are new to my blog, welcome!  I often search the Environmental Working Group website for product ratings on safety as far as how toxic it is.  I recently discovered a dish soap I wanted to try, and the brand is Eco Me.

A little about the company from their website:

Eco-Me has an extensive product line that is not limited to dishwashing.  They have everything from a dog wash line, hand soap, cleaning spray and much more.  What I love about the company is they are trying to make an impact on people’s health.  We need to be concerned about the chemicals we are putting in our body as well as the ones we are using around the house daily!

The Lemon Fresh dish soap has a fresh smell! It bubbles up nicely, and the dishes feel extra clean after rinsing.  Also, a little goes a long way!  At first, I put way too much but a small squirt is enough for this whole load!

Let's be honest, I very much dislike washing dishes but I have to do it several times a day (unless I load the dishwasher, which is not very often).  Having a product such as this is much better than conventional soaps you can find in the store.  It doesn't contain the harsh chemicals that are going to harm you in the long run.  Just think about it, if you’re using conventional dish soap, you are putting chemicals on your eating utensils, sippy cups or bottles!

Below is a before and after picture.  When I have used castile soap in the past to wash dishes sometimes I feel it doesn't get them as clean but that is not the case with Eco Me.

Green Line Diapers Review

I have to admit with my cloth diaper obsession that I have been stalking Green Line Diapers for a while now.  They requested bloggers to review their diapers, and I jumped at the chance!  I am happy to tell you how much I love it!

We received this super cute ballerina print cover!  My daughter is 19 months now and she loves putting it on (maybe because I have taught her to turn around like a ballerina)!

Just a little note about the company from their website:

"We are a small family consisting of me, my husband and our 3 year old daughter. We live on a small island in British Columbia, Canada. Both my husband and I are equally involved in our home business - we both are home full time not only raising our daughter but also busy sewing cloth diapers for others to love!"

Now on to the details:

The diapers are a two part system; a cover that consists of breathable waterproof material and a cotton outer layer.  The second part is a single layer bamboo cotton insert that you fold, so it has 6 layers to put inside the cover.  This was my first experience using a cover and prefold.  This may be why I was even more excited to try out Green Line Diapers!

Here is a great video from Green Line Diapers on how to fold the insert into a Airplane fold:  Video from Green Line Diapers

Features
  • Breathable waterproof covers -(No PUL) The waterproof barrier is made from a material called Ultrex.  Some kiddies are have sensitivities to PUL so this is a great alternative!
  • Drawstring adjustable at leg -This makes the diaper fully adjustable from birth to potty train.

  • Hook and loop closure-I love this especially at night!  We use hook and loop at night when little girl was waking to feed and needed a quick diaper change in the dark; it was much easier than snaps!  One thing I will say is the hook and loop is very sticky so the chances of her getting if off during the day are pretty slim!

  • Fold down back-This would be great for smaller babies who have the pooplosion! I would imagine you unfold it for smaller kiddies.  Since little girl doesn't have that to worry about we folded it down and it just adds a cute pink trim on the top.

Through my experience, I found a couple things to be cautious of:
  1. Make sure you do not tighten the string too tight!  I did this and little girl had terrible marks on her legs!  After that, I adjusted it for the correct size!
  2. I would make sure at nap time that I put on shorts if she was wearing a sun dress, because little girl did try to play with the strings a little.
Other than those two things we loved everything about the diaper.  I particularly love that it is breathable!  I just wish I had more of the inserts so I could get more use out of it!  I am definitely going to have to order some!

There is a great tutorial on how to fold the diaper and insert on Green Line Diapers website.

My Hometown Favorites

Today I want to bring to you a collaboration piece from two totally different hometowns one is the big city of Chicago and the other my small town of Burlington, NC.

Kendra Thornton is from Chicago and is a stay at home mom to three boys.  She is formally Orbitz Director of Communications and travelled a great deal.  She wanted to share her hometown favorites as did I.

A Few of My Hometown Favorites

Because Chicago is my home city, you'd think I would have experienced everything that it has to offer by now, but one of the most enthralling things about Chicago is that the city is constantly evolving. Even the same wonderful landmarks, restaurants and museums aren't the same each time you visit them. While it would be impossible to list all that Chicago has to offer, this is a list of some of my favorite things Chicago has to offer.

Grant Park

Grant Park is the best all-purpose destination that Chicago has to offer, as there are attractions that appeal to those with many different interests. You'll find the world-renowned Millennium Park here, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Buckingham Fountain and the Museum Campus. First designated as a park in the year 1844, the park has been evolving ever since. It is located in the heart of Chicago, allowing you to take in the beauty of the city while still enjoying the arts. Further, with an abundance of park space, it is a great place to spend an afternoon. I often bring a lunch and enjoy a picnic!

Chicago Pizza

One of my favorite parts about Chicago is our pizza. The deep-dish pies here are completely different than a regular pizza you will get anywhere else in the world. One of my favorite places to enjoy Chicago-style pizza is at Gino’s East. A staple of Chicago, Gino’s East has been around for some time, and while it may be very popular now, it still maintains its deep Chicago roots! When going to the restaurant, they allow the patrons to write on the walls, and my family has enjoyed leaving our autographs there!

Great Day Activities

Chicago's Magnificent Mile includes the Historic Water Tower, where you'll find a sight for the eyes with a Chicago-focused photo gallery. Open year-round, you can really see straight into the heart of the city while perusing the works here. Because it's located in the midst of the shopping paradise known as the “Magnificent Mile,” you can also quench your shopping urge here.

Experience Chicago Even As You Sleep

While it is easy to forget how incredible a big city is from an architectural and historical standpoint when you live there, I love to marvel at the sites. In order to truly experience the unique ambiance of the city, be sure to use a hotel reviews site like gogobot to book your stay in one of Chicago’s historic hotels. This will help you find the place that best suits your individual tastes and preferences, all while being able to experience Chicago firsthand.

A few of my Hometown Favorites
Alamance County is fairly small, but surprisingly there is a lot to do here!  It is my hometown and it has changed quite a bit over the years.  From parks, children’s museums, restaurants and shopping, we pretty much have it all!  I just want to share a few attractions that are some of my favorites.
Burlington City Park
The City Park is an amusement park with rides for little ones including a fully restored Dentzel Carousel.   It is said that the carousel attracts thousands of visitors each season.  One interesting fact is that It is in the National Historical Register.   While the carousel is great, there is also a train, which is my favorite for kids and adults.  The park has 75 acres of ball fields, walking tracks, rides and concessions.
Children’s Museum of Alamance County
Originally built in downtown Burlington, they have relocated to a brand new building in Graham, NC.  There is 14,000 square feet of play space with eight exhibit areas for kids to play.  The age range for kids is birth up to 10 years old.  This is a great place for a mommy’s day out; the kids can play and you can interact with them.
Farmers Markets and Co-op’s
Alamance County is still a farming community and following that there are more and more farmers markets popping up.  Most Saturdays you can find at least one or two, with several being during the week.  We also have a community co-op grocery store that has opened which families can buy into.  They have organic, local produce and many other products that you can not find in other stores.  You do not have to be a member to shop, which is good for anyone just wanting to check it out.  They also have a cafe where you can get food to-go or dine in.
Restaurants
There is a vast array of restaurants across Alamance County.  We have everything from fast food to fine dining.  There are many chain operations that have made their way to the town including the newest craze Krispy Kreme.  Although many restaurants are new there are some that have been here through the years.  One of my favorites is the Village Grill.  One of their signature dishes is the marinated key west grilled chicken.  Along with the Village Grill, another favorite is Jims Tasty Freeze in Graham, NC.  They have the best ice cream around with my personal favorite being the reeses cup freeze (with extra reeses)!
Graham Cinema
This movie theater has been around for many years.  It sits in the heart of Graham.  They show movies for only $4 per person and you can get popcorn and a drink with refills without being robbed of your wallet.  It’s more than going to see a movie, it’s an experience!  After all, getting to use the old popcorn shooting machine to refill your popcorn is pretty thrilling!

I hope you enjoyed reading about our hometown favorites and we would love to hear some of your favorites as well!

Shorganics Review and Giveaway

I have been wanting to try other natural deodorants because the ones I have been using do not work for me at all!  I hoped to find a deodorant that is both natural and effective!  I found a local company called Shorganics that was willing to let me review their deodorant for my honest opinion.

A little about Shorganics from their website:
"Matt & Megan Vick started Shorganics many years ago as a hobby because they were unable to find products to cater to their sensitive skin. Their journey began when, after exhaustive research, they discovered that even the most highly praised "all natural" products contained ingredients that were less than desirable. They learned the truth about sulfates, parabens, and other substances and with this knowledge; they set out to make something better.

Inspired by the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where they grew up, Matt and Megan decided to make a line of products like the beach. Both fragile and durable, but always natural and pure, the beaches endure constant change and bring happiness to everyone who visits and lives there. Shorganics products are never tested on animals and use vegan and organic ingredients to deliver a pure product which brings happiness to all those who use it."

There are two deodorant scents to choose from and I selected the Lavender Lemongrass.  I feel like working in a restaurant and being a busy mom I tested this to the fullest extent!

Features that I liked:

  • The Ingredients-Certified Vegan and only consists of a few simple ingredients.  Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Candelilla Wax, Organic Cocoa Butter, Baking Soda*, Organic Corn Starch, Organic Arrowroot Powder, Organic Lavender Oil, Organic Lemon Oil, Organic Rosemary Oil Extract
    *Aluminum Free
  • The Smell- it smells great, you get a hint of both the lavender and lemongrass!
  • I am not putting Aluminum (Cancer causing) under my arms!
  • Moisture Control-I did not sweat as much as I normally do
  • Odor Control
  • Easy to apply

The only one thing I found out about this deodorant while working in a very hot and busy restaurant was that I should have reapplied before going into work.  I found that after I simply applied another application before work I was fresh!  With that in mind, I would much rather reapply than put cancer causing product under my arms.

Shorganics makes many other products, some of which include items such as clay masks, lip balms, face scrubs, soaps, and even candles.

All products they make are:
  • Certified organic ingredients
  • 100% Vegan - all ingredients are vegan and our equipment does not come in contact with animal products
  • Fair Trade or Good Trade ingredients
  • 100% Cruelty-free - Never tested on animals
  • No Parabens, Phthlates, SLS, or any other synthetic chemicals commonly found in skin care

With the Hope of Jesus Christ You Can Endure!

I want to share with you all the story of Heather Von St. James, she is a mesothelioma survivor.  She contacted me and wanted me to share her story with you all of hope.

When her daughter was 3 1/2 months old she was diagnosed with this life threating cancer and she was given 15 months to live.

Heather told me in her words,  "My prognosis was grim but I knew that I needed to beat the odds for my newborn daughter, Lily.  It’s been 7 years now and I feel that it is my duty to pay it forward and inspire others."

She wants to encourage others going through any battle especially cancer that there is a hope you can cling to.   Heather wants to raise awareness by sharing a video with us about this rare and little known cancer.  You can view it in the link below.

    Heather's story

Heather wants to inspire others and her wish is if she can encourage just one person she is happy!

I am glad for Heather that she overcame this deadly disease.  I thank her for wanting me to share it with you all.

My own thoughts are there is a hope that everyone can cling to not only in sickness and death but in everyday joy and happiness!  That is the hope of Jesus Christ.  Without that hope in your heart you have nothing.  I leave you with words from the Living God.

    Psalm 25:5
Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

    Psalm 31:24
Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.

    Micah 7:7
But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.

    Romans 5

    New International Version (NIV)

    Peace and Hope

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we[b] boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

You can connect with Heather on Facebook.  I am sure if you have questions for her she will be more than happy to help you especially if you are suffering or know someone who is from this cancer!

    Thank you for reading!
